February Β· The Lombardi Trophy Β· Sixty Games and Counting

Super Bowl

The first one wasn't even called the Super Bowl. Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt borrowed the name from his kids' Super Ball, half as a joke, and the league asked around for something better before making it official at the third game. Sixty games later, the seven most-watched broadcasts in American TV history are all Super Bowls, halftime gets thirty minutes, long enough for a full stadium concert, and thirty seconds of ad time costs more than $8 million. Carolina has made the trip twice, losing to New England in Houston and to Denver in Santa Clara. This hub has eight games on the numerals, the dynasties, the halftime shows and the commercials people still bring up on Monday.
