February 14 Β· Saints, Poets, Candy Hearts & Rom-Coms

Valentine's Day

Nobody can say for sure which Saint Valentine the day belongs to. There's a priest of Rome and a bishop of Terni, both buried along the Via Flaminia, and they may have been the same man. The romance came more than a thousand years later, when Chaucer wrote a poem around 1382 about birds choosing their mates on Saint Valentine's Day, and the cards and candy came after that, with Esther Howland's lace valentines in Worcester and Cadbury's heart-shaped box in 1868. This hub has eight games on the saints, the poets, the love songs, the rom-coms and the little hearts that say Be Mine.
